Fitzroy Legal Clinic

Depending on the role – for legal positions, previous experience in a CTC or similar organization. When the Fitzroy Legal Service opened on 18 December 1972, it became Australia`s first non-Aboriginal legal centre. In the basement of Fitzroy City Hall, one of Melbourne`s poorest suburbs at the time, this new legal department set itself the goal of doing the unthinkable: providing free legal advice to all arrivals. The Fitzroy Legal Service is a municipal legal centre that has been providing free, low-cost legal services in various areas of law since 1972. Our main office is located at Fitzroy Town Hall, where we operate our nightly reception service, specialty clinics and legal representation. In addition to our main office, we have duty counsel who work at the Collingwood Neighbourhood Justice Centre, as well as drug and domestic violence lawyers. Our specialized legal advice includes family law, animal law, travel and homeless labour law, and our LGBTQIA+ family law clinic. Our Family Violence Team provides a bi-weekly outreach service to Drummond Street Services clients through Queerspace. Through this service, our community lawyer is able to advise and refer people with legal needs related to domestic violence. Our LGBTQIA+ family law clinic takes place every first Wednesday of the month and addresses a range of family law issues, including parenting and real estate counselling.

The clinic only advises, which allows them to refer them to our family law practice if necessary. Fitzroy Legal Service is a community-based organization independent of government dedicated to providing legal information, advice and representation to marginalized and vulnerable members of the community, as well as advocating for legal reform and litigation in the public interest. Our services are offered in the cities of Darebin and Yarra as well as in the north interior of Melbourne.
